Welcome!

The Town of Maynard is developing a plan for a consumer-friendly group electricity purchasing program called Maynard Power Choice. The program will give you:

  • Greater control over the cost and environmental impact of the electricity you buy.
  • Three new options for the Supply portion of your Eversource bill.
  • Stable and competitive prices with the potential for savings compared with Eversource’s prices, though Eversource’s Basic Service prices change seasonally, so savings compared with Eversource cannot be guaranteed.

In launching Maynard Power Choice, Maynard will join more than 200 other Massachusetts communities with similar programs. And when you participate in Maynard Power Choice, you’ll join tens of thousands of other electricity customers across Massachusetts in working towards a more sustainable future.

Aggregation documents

Before launching the program, the Town must develop an Aggregation Plan and submit it to state regulators for review and approval. A public presentation was delivered about the draft Aggregation Plan for Maynard Power Choice on June 4, 2024, and the Plan and sample Opt-Out Mailing Materials were made available for public comment from June 4 until July 8, 2024. They remain available for public review below.

In addition, a hard copy of the draft Plan is available from the Town of Maynard Clerk’s Office (195 Main Street, Maynard, MA).

Cleaner electricity

Maynard Power Choice participants will automatically receive more electricity from renewable sources (like the sun and the wind) than is required by state law, though the specific amount is still to be determined.

Stable prices

Maynard Power Choice will aim to provide long-term electricity supply prices and protection from seasonal price spikes.

Consumer protections

Maynard Power Choice is being designed to protect Maynard consumers. The program will have no hidden fees, and you will have the freedom to opt out of, or leave, the program at any time with no penalty.

Details such as prices, how much renewable electricity will be included, and when the program will launch will be determined after Maynard’s Aggregation Plan receives approval from state regulators. Learn about the implementation process.

How electricity aggregation works

Through Maynard Power Choice, Maynard can determine the amount of renewable energy in the community’s electricity supply and lock in an electricity supply price. However, Maynard Power Choice won’t replace Eversource as Maynard’s electric utility. If you participate:

  • Eversource will continue delivering your electricity without interruption, and you’ll still contact Eversource for power outages.
  • Eversource will continue to send your electric bill, which is the only electric bill you’ll receive as a participant in the program. However, Eversource will use a Maynard price to calculate your Supply charge.
  • Any discounts or credits you receive from Eversource, like a low-income discount or credits from solar, won’t change. But if you’re on Budget Billing with Eversource, it will no longer apply to your Supply charge.

Most Maynard electricity customers will be automatically enrolled (except those with existing private electricity supply contracts). If your account qualifies for automatic enrollment, you’ll receive a mail notification from the Town with pricing and program details before enrollment.

If you have a private supply contract, you can opt in easily, but it’s advisable to check with your current supplier first to avoid possible early termination fees.

Participation is not required. The automatic enrollment model is state law for all municipal electricity programs like Maynard Power Choice, but you can opt out of, or leave, the program before enrollment or any time after enrollment with no penalty.

Protect your electricity account number

Eversource will never knock on your door or call you to talk about your electric bill.
Only provide your account number if you are ready to change your electricity supplier.
